Saint Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt

Blue Ribbon Transport has experienced tremendous growth over the last 12-18 months and with everyone working so efficiently serving our customers, we like to get creative to encourage mingling a little among departments during the work day.

To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, BRT’s engagement committee created an office wide scavenger hunt.  Prior to the event, the engagement committee asked all employees to provide two interesting facts about him/herself.  These facts would be the clues throughout the scavenger hunt.  We received impressive, unique and hilarious clues like:

  • I once rescued a baby black bear who was abandoned by it’s mother.
  • I have won 5 state championships.
  • I’m terrified of the movie, E.T.
  • My grandparents were part of a mob in Chicago back in the 60’s.
  • My school’s mascot was a Twig.

All employees, including the leadership team, were divided into 12 teams that consisted of individuals from various departments.  First they had to agree to a team name (Fire Breathing Kittens (?)), then they had to work as a team to find the individuals who provided the clues.

The event kicked off at noon and we quickly learned how competitive our peers are.

The event was a lot of fun; got everyone out of their seats talking with their peers; and allowed all of us to appreciate each other!

How to Fight a Cold (sniff, sniff)

zincThis time of year many of us feel that stuffy head, runny nose, scratchy throat coming on and it’s hard to shake with this daily changing weather.  There’s a ton of products on the market promoting Vitamin C as the natural way to combat a cold and you’ve probably tried a few of those remedies.

But did you know zinc works better than Vitamin C?  Vitamin C boosts immunity but studies show zinc shortens a cold by about a day and a half.  Start taking zinc within 48 hours of that first tickle in your throat and try some zinc lozenges.  They were found to shorten the duration of common cold episodes by up to 40% in a study published in the Open Respiratory Medicine Journal.

To ward of illness, consider incorporating zinc on a daily basis.  It’s important for a healthy immune system, properly synthesizing DNA, promoting healthy growth during childhood, and healing wounds.  And, a study from researchers at Oregon State University have found that improving zinc status through diet and supplementation may reduce the risk of inflammatory diseases.

Additional benefits of zinc include proper functioning of the digestive systems, control of diabetes, reduction of stress levels, energy metabolism, and an increased rate of healing for acne and wounds.  Also, zinc is helpful in terms of pregnancy, hair care, eczema, weight loss, night blindness, colds, eye care, appetite loss and many other minor conditions.
